Control what you share

Be cautious with emails and messages. If something feels off, stop and check the source before sharing personal information. If you've shared something by mistake, stop sharing it (or ask the file owner to do so) and contact the IT Service Desk to report a data breach. 

• Find out how to recognise and report spam and phishing emails.
• If you've got data stored on OneDrive or SharePoint, you can control who you share it with, what they can do and how long they have access more. Find out more about sharing links and learn how to share securely in email and OneDrive.

Your P^5*w0rd is your power

Create strong, unique passwords by combining three random words.

• Find out how to create a strong password and what to do if you forget your password. 
• If you need help remembering all your passwords, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has advice on password managers. 

Remember - only you should know your password. If you think your password has been leaked, or someone else has access to it, contact the IT Service Desk immediately. 

Double up your defence

Enhance your security by using multi-factor authentication (MFA), also known as two factor authentication (2FA).

• At the University we use Duo to protect our systems. If a hacker has your password, they may send you lots of MFA requests hoping you'll eventually accept one. Don't accept any requests you weren't expecting, and contact the Service Desk if you think your password has been compromised. 
• Most systems, like social media, banks and shopping sites support MFA. Find out more about using MFA outside the University on the NCSC site. 

Protect your tech

Keep your devices secure by regularly updating your software - they often include essential security upgrades.

• University managed computers are automatically kept up to date and have anti-virus software installed, but to secure your personal devices and find out more about anti-virus software, check out the advice on the NCSC site
• If you have a University managed computer which needs a software update that is asking for admin rights, use this form to request an update. 

Step-up your skills

Stay informed about cyber security. Report anything suspicious keep yourself and others safe

• Report spam and phishing emails using the report buttons in Outlook. If you think your University account has been compromised, contact the IT Service Desk immediately
