Accessing new Teams


From March 31st new Teams will be the default Teams application. This article covers how to access the new Teams desktop application in Windows and Mac on University managed devices.

How do I access the desktop version of new Teams? 

Windows 

If your University of Leeds Windows device is managed by University IT, you should be able to see the new Teams desktop application. To view the new Teams desktop application on your device please follow the below instructions.  

In your start menu search for Teams, you will see 'Microsoft Teams (work or school)’ appear alongside Teams Classic. 

'Microsoft Teams (work or school)’ can be used to launch new Teams.

Once launched new Teams will be your default version.  

Mac 

If your University of Leeds Mac device is managed by University IT, you should be able to see the new Teams desktop application. To view the new Teams desktop application on your device please follow the below instructions.   

Search in your applications folder for “Microsoft Teams (work or school)” this will appear alongside Teams Classic.  

Launch “Microsoft Teams (work or school)” in the normal way and sign in. 

Once launched new Teams will be your default version.  

Minimum requirements for Accessing new Teams Desktop Application 

In order to access new Teams via the desktop application, you will need to meet the following technical requirements.

Windows   

1. Windows 10 version 10.0.19041 or higher is required for the new Teams Windows desktop application to work.  

To find out what version of Windows you are running please see Microsoft's guidance. 

2. Version 1.6.00.4472 of Teams Classic or higher is required for the new Teams Windows desktop application to work.  

To check the version of Teams Classic you are running and to update your version please select the overflow menu (…) > Check for updates > Update. Then restart your app. 

This will then begin updating your Classic Teams desktop application and a banner will appear across the top of the screen to confirm when it has been updated. 

If you are running an outdated version of Teams you may see a banner across the top of your Teams Classic desktop application. For more information please see the Microsoft guidance.  

Mac   

1 . MacOS 12 (Monterey), macOS 13 (Ventura) or macOS 14 (Sonoma) or higher is required for the new Teams Mac desktop application to work.   

 To find out what version of Windows you are running please see Apple’s guidance.

2 . Version 1.6.00.12303 of Teams Classic or higher is required for the new Teams Mac desktop application to work.   

To check the version of Teams Classic you are running please: Select the Settings and more menu next to your profile picture at the top right of Teams > and then select Check for updates.  

This will then begin updating your Classic Teams desktop application and a banner will appear across the top of the screen to confirm when it has been updated. 

Unable to meet minimum requirements for accessing new Teams Desktop Application – University Owned Device 

Classic Teams users who have encountered issues moving to new Teams desktop or who don't meet the prerequisites to upgrade will still have access to the classic Teams client until July 01 2024. However, we strongly advise you to contact IT Services immediately to discuss further support.
