MIcrosoft 365 updates

Microsoft 365 (or M365) is the whole suite of Microsoft products, covering things like Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint and many other apps. Microsoft are continually updating these and share their plans in the Microsoft Roadmap (but note, at the University we may not have access to all the products shown in the Roadmap).  We’ve highlighted some of the recent changes below.

March 2024

Microsoft Teams

Update your Teams version

Microsoft are rolling out a new version of Teams, and everyone can now start using the new version in the desktop application (for Windows and MacOS) and the web version (Chrome and Edge). The new Teams client loads faster and lets you join meetings more quickly. If you have multiple accounts with different organisations, the new Teams can bring them together more easily in one place. There will also be changes to the web browser version of Teams to ensure a consistent design experience. We recommend using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome where possible to get the best experience using Teams on the web.  There are still some known issues with the new version, and Microsoft has provided a list of the issues.

New Recap tab

The “Recording and Transcription” tab in Teams meetings is being replaced with a “Recap” tab. This will let you quickly revisit highlights of your Microsoft Teams meeting recording including viewing your meeting recording, shared content, and more without switching screens or apps.

New Planner app in Teams

The new Microsoft Planner app in Teams is a single, unified work management experience, bringing together the simplicity of To Do, the collaboration of Planner and the power of Project into a single and simple solution.

Files app has become OneDrive app

You may have noticed that the Files app in Teams has been replaced with a OneDrive app in the new version of Teams. It’s a quick way to access everything stored on your OneDrive without having to leave Teams. Find out more about the different storage locations used at the University and the different ways of accessing OneDrive

Channel meeting invites

Often, channel meetings get missed as people don’t notice the notification in the channel. Now, when you set up a channel meeting look for the toggle that allows you to send a meeting invite direct to all channel members.

Other M365 apps

Microsoft Publisher

In October 2026, Microsoft Publisher will reach its end of life. After that time, it will no longer be included in Microsoft 365 and existing on-premises suites will no longer be supported.
