Process for first-time user log-in away from campus

If you are due to receive MacBook which has been prepared on campus by IT, but you are unable to come to site to log in for the first time, you will need to follow this guide to ensure a successful first log-in and password synchronisation with university servers.

IT staff will create an account on your device which uses your normal university username. Your account will be set up with a temporary password which you should use only as directed in this guide.

Your device will be delivered to you fully charged but in a sleep state so that when you open the lid, you will see the log-in screen listing your account, the administrator account and some menu items at the foot of the screen.

DO NOT POWER OFF / REBOOT YOUR MACHINE UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR FIRST LOGIN.

Connect your device to a wired, WiFi or tethered network (eduroam will not work at this stage).

With a successful Internet connection, click the Network Login / Azure Login icon at the foot of the screen. This will open up a Microsoft Sign-in window. If your Internet connection is not working properly, the window will be solid black or white. Try reconnecting but avoid rebooting.

NB If you do not see the icons at the bottom of the screen, it is likely that the machine has rebooted unexpectedly. Please contact the IT Service Desk for further assistance at this stage.

At the next stage, you will be informed that your local password does not match your university password and be asked for your old password. Enter the temporary password for your account as supplied by IT.

Once through all these validations, you will be taken into your account, where you can complete the set-up of applications such as Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and Office products. The eduroam WiFi network may now be used, also.

With your first login successfully completed, you are now free to reboot the device as required. Upon reboot, simply select your user account from the list and enter your normal password.
