This KB article captures general information about the Azure Backup Services deployed for the LASER Service.
The new service is called LASER (Leeds Analytics Secure Environment for Research) which is a PaaS cloud based service on the Microsoft Azure platform.
Azure Backup Services for LASER
Microsoft’s Azure Backup Service is a cloud-based storage service that allows one to backup and restore data from the Azure cloud. This service will be utilised to protect and support the research projects hosted by the Azure platform underpinned by a backup policy and data retention requirements for any given LASER VRE project.
The Azure Backup Service is based upon the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent and uses a Backup Service Vault, connected to Azure storage services. These agents will be utilised within the VRE environment, consisting of various Azure resources, such as VMs and File Shared Storage, SQL databases, Web App services and many more.
To develop both a consistent cost model and a support model, a number of documents have been developed which describe the agreed set of standard expectations applied to the backup policies and data retention requirements across various VRE projects. This also helps to support and provide a consistent approach to cost estimations for the VRE projects.
This document is a guide and describes the Microsoft Azure Backup Service which will be utilised to protect and support the research projects hosted by the Azure platform underpinned by a backup policy and data retention requirements for any given VRE project. The VRE environment, consists of Azure resources, such as VMs and File Storage, SQL databases, Web App services and many more.
By default, this will be a backup retention period is based upon the backup policy schedule defined below of Daily VM backup and Storage backup at 7:00pm and 6:30pm respectively (UTC). Due to the agreed backup policies applied to each resource, restoration of services may take longer than expected. The following table describes the backup retention policy.
|Backups / Snapshots||VM OS||Shared File Storage|
|Daily||7 days||28 days|
|Weekly||4 weeks||4 weeks|
|Monthly||0 months||12 months|
|Yearly||0 months||1 years (or length of term)|
A request must be made via the IT Self Service portal to recover data backed up by the Azure Backup Service.
If you have any further queries or require further information, please consult with the LIDA's Data Analytics Team (DAT) in the first instance to discuss your initial VRE project requirements. The DAT team will make further enquires on your behalf as well as submitting your requirements, subject to approval, to IT Services to commence VRE builds and or changes to your existing VRE VM environments.
More information is available on the LIDA's documentation site.
You may also wish to discuss further options by raising a Service Request for the Service Delivery Management team.
