Your remote access to key systems


While you work off campus there are several ways you can access University systems. Most systems and applications are accessible using an internet browser and your University of Leeds account.

Web Browser / Office 365

Most of the University’s services (including Minerva, Faculty/Student services and the Library website) can be  accessed through a web browser or using Office 365 apps, such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneDrive, Teams and SharePoint

Use these wherever possible.

Accessing M / N drives or the software needed for your studies.

Use Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) academic if you need access to M or N drives, or the software you need for your studies (using AppsAnywhere on the WVD).

Use Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) academic desktop to access teaching software

 

Accessing M / N drives or web services such as Employee Self Service (ESS).

Use the Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) general if you need access to M or N drives and web services such as ESS.

 

Accessing M / N drives or web services such as ESS, SAP or Banner ODBC (open database connectivity). 

Use Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) general if you need access to M or N drives and web services such as ESS.

Use WVD restricted to access SAP and Banner ODBC. 

Specialist software may require Cluster remote access.

Some software may not be available through the WVD, and you may need to log on to an on-campus cluster remotely. Your tutor will tell you if you need to do this.

Accessing a specific on-campus computer.

The Remote Desktop Gateway (RDG) lets you connect to a specific on-campus Windows computer (for example to access specialist software).

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

The VPN allows you to access applications and resources available only on the campus network.
However, there are a limited number of licences, and you should only use VPN if none of the methods above are suitable. See the related VPN article.
