How to Reset or Unlock Your Password Using Self Service Password Reset


These steps assume you have already completed SSPR registration. If not, please refer to 'How do I register for self service password resets'

This article explains how to reset your University of Leeds password or unlock your account using Self Service Password Reset (SSPR).

Before You Begin

If you use multiple devices (e.g. laptop, mobile phone, tablet), each one may still attempt to connect using your old password. This can immediately lock your account again.

Before resetting or unlocking your password:


Reset Your Password (If You've Forgotten It)

If you are registered for SSPR, follow these steps:

Step 1. Go to the self service password reset portal

Visit https://aka.ms/sspr or click the Password Reset link.

Step 2. Enter your details
  • In User ID, enter: username@leeds.ac.uk
  • Complete the CAPTCHA
  • Select Next
Step 3. Select “I've forgotten my password”

Click Next to continue.

Step 4. Complete verification

SSPR requires two verification methods from the following:

  • Email to your alternative email address
  • Text to your registered mobile number
  • Your security questions (if previously set)

Step 5. Create a new password

You will be prompted to:

  • Enter your new password
  • Confirm it
  • Click Finish

Important: Your new password must follow University password guidelines.

After completion, you will see confirmation that the password has been reset. Close your browser.

Unlock Your Account (If You're Locked Out)

If your account is locked due to too many incorrect login attempts:

Step 1. Go to the self service password reset portal

Visit https://aka.ms/sspr or click the Password Reset link.

Step 2. Enter your details
  • Enter username@leeds.ac.uk
  • Complete the CAPTCHA
  • Click Next
Step 3. Select “I know my password, but still can’t sign in”

Click Next.

Step 4. Complete verification

Self service password reset will request any two verification methods you registered.

Once verified, you will see confirmation that your account has been successfully unlocked. Close your browser afterwards.

  1. Select Email my alternate email
  2. Click Email
  3. Enter the verification code sent to your alternate email
  4. Click Next
Option 2. Text my mobile phone
  1. Select Send a text to my mobile phone number
  2. Enter your phone number
  3. Click Text
  4. Enter the verification code
  5. Select Next
Option 3. Answer security questions

Only available if completed during registration.

  1. Select Answer my security questions
  2. Answer the three randomly presented questions
  3. Click Next

What if I haven’t registered for Self service password resets?

You cannot reset or unlock your password using SSPR. Contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

Why am I locked out even with the correct password?

A device may still be trying to connect using an old saved password, especially via eduroam. Remove saved passwords on all devices first.

Does SSPR work when I’m off campus?

Yes, as long as you have an internet connection.

What if my verification code doesn’t arrive?

Check spam/junk folders, confirm mobile signal, and ensure your alternate contact details are up to date.

Do I need to close my browser after resetting or unlocking?

Yes. This ensures cached login data doesn’t interfere with your next sign‑in attempt.
