How to remove saved passwords


This page will show you how to remove saved passwords from various browsers. If you are doing this prior to changing your password and have a Windows computer, you may also need to remove them within Windows Credentials:

Remove Windows Credentials

  1. In Windows 10, click on the Start button and type Credentials. Click on Credential Manager to open it.
    In Windows 7, click on the Start button, choose Control Panel, and then search for Credential Manager in the Search Control Panel box. Click on Credential Manager to open it.
  2. When Credential Manager has opened, with the Web Credentials tab selected, you will see a list of sites where Windows has saved the password.
  3. For each site that is related to the University of Leeds (eg has leeds or office in the address) click on the down arrow next to the site and click Remove
  4. Click on the Windows Credentials tab and repeat this process.
  5. Click on the X at the top right of the Credential Manager window to close it

Remove passwords from Chrome

  1. In the Chrome browser, go to chrome://settings/autofill
  2. Click Passwords
  3. Click the three vertical dots next to the site whose password you’d like to remove (eg anything with .leeds.ac.uk in the name) and click Remove

Remove passwords from Safari

  1. Open the Safari menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Switch to the Autofill tab.
  4. Click the Edit button for Usernames and Passwords
  5. Delete the entries you want to remove (eg anything with .leeds.ac.uk in the name)

Remove passwords from Edge (HTML)

  1. Open the Edge menu using the button on the far right of the browser toolbar (three horizontal dots)
  2. Select Settings
  3. Under "Clear browsing data" select Choose what to clear
  4. Tick Passwords and click Clear

Remove passwords from Edge (Chromium)

The Edge Chromium icon resembles a wave in various shades of blue and green

  1. Open the Edge menu using the button on the far right of the browser toolbar (three horizontal dots)
  2. Select Settings
  3. On the left select Privacy and services
  4. Under "Clear browsing data" select Choose what to clear
  5. Tick Passwords and click Clear now

Remove passwords from Internet Explorer

To delete individual passwords:

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click Content.
  4. Under AutoComplete, click Settings.
  5. Click on Manage Passwords
  6. Click on the Web Credentials Manager
  7. Click on the drop down arrow by the web site (eg anything with .leeds.ac.uk in the name) you want to remove the password.
  8. Click on Remove.

To delete all saved passwords:

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click Content.
  4. Under AutoComplete, click Settings.
  5. Click Delete AutoComplete history…

Remove passwords from Firefox

Windows

  1. Click the menu button and choose Preferences.
  2. Switch to the Security tab.
  3. Click on Saved Logins….
  4. To remove all saved passwords, click Remove all.  To remove specific saved passwords, click on the site name (eg anything with .leeds.ac.uk in the name) in the Site column and click on it once to highlight it in blue. Then click the Remove button below.

MacOS

  1. In the menu bar, open the Firefox menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Switch to the Security tab.
  4. Click on Saved Passwords.
  5. To remove all saved passwords, click Remove all. To remove specific saved passwords, click View Saved Passwords and delete the required ones (eg anything with .leeds.ac.uk in the name).
